Growing a new-to-world retail brand

Patina is a small boutique hand-crafted jewellery business. As a small start-up, they needed an ‘agile’ approach to developing their brand as well as their supporting collateral.

The jewellery industry is one of the most diverse that we’ve worked with. The variety of competition is extreme, ranging from the mass-produced manufactured style of jewellery to the ultra expensive hand-crafted designer pieces. It’s also an industry where the costs of sales fluctuate

dramatically depending on the quality of materials the jeweller chooses to use. For example, Zirconiums, Diamonds, high and low Carat Gold all offer the end customer a similar look, but with dramatic differences in the jewellery’s price point.

By working with Spire I’ve realised just how important it is to have a vision. When running a small business you tend to deal with the here and now. To have a vision and to see it all taking shape, helps to keep me inspired and realise that this is achievable – a big thank you for your continued efforts.

Therefore positioning the Patina brand within the jewellery industry needed careful planning and consideration. By working together we helped to define the answers to fundamental questions such as; how did they want their brand to be perceived in the future? Did they want to be recognised for a particular type of jewellery?

How did they plan on selling their jewellery in the future? Was it through resellers or directly to customers online through an eCommerce website? Without answering these types of questions, it’s too easy to get off track and grow your business organically, jumping from one idea to the next.

‘Agile’ branding requires the client to make some informed up-front decisions and to have a vision of where they want the business to be so that they can start taking measured steps towards their intended goal. Guiding this process is part of our offer, helping smaller businesses to make clear-minded decisions about how they want their business to work and how they want their brand to be perceived. This forward-thinking and yet measured approach to building a brand enables a business to grow in pre-defined stages. Stages that fit with the budget limitations

and timeframe constraints of smaller businesses. As part of the ‘Agile’ solution, it was decided that Patina’s brand positioning should evoke her ‘personalised hand-crafted’ approach, allowing us to use Social Media as a channel to help grow her existing Database. To support this brand positioning, interviews with Christine were filmed to allow her to talk about her passion for hand-crafted designs, reinforcing the brand’s intimate hand-crafted style.
